My name is Justin Matz and I'm a professional working drummer. I have been teaching drums for over 35 years, since 1989. Through lessons with me you'll learn everything from basic rudiments and marching band drumming, to super-advanced techniques in four-way coordination and rhythmic interdependence on the drum set.
I teach kids and adults ages 10 and up. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player, I teach all styles including Rock, Jazz, Funk, Blues, Metal, Fusion, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, African, or whatever new styles are happening now.
Anyone can become a great drummer! There's no such thing as talent. It just takes practice and dedication. If you can practice the material I give you each week, you will eventually reach your goal of becoming a great drummer no matter who you are!

Drum lessons are LIVE online! All you need is a phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer. During online lessons I can switch between eight different camera angles in my studio to help you see exactly what I am playing. The best part is that the live online drum lessons are no different from in-person lessons. My curriculum is clear enough to understand in the engaging, high-quality environment I provide. With LIVE online lessons, students can take advantage of learning from anywhere!
"Justin is amazing! Because of the Covid pandemic we did our drum lessons via Zoom. At first we were skeptical in regards to how well our 10-year-old would do via Zoom drum lessons. After the first Zoom lesson, he was hooked. Justin makes it so easy to do the lessons via Zoom and he relates and teaches in a way that our son, who had never played drums, took right to them. If you are even thinking about using Justin I would highly recommend it. I promise, you WILL NOT regret it."

All my students do really well and many perform in local and national acts such as my student Mike Byrne from the band 'Smashing Pumpkins'. Many others have gone on to win the local drumset competitions, or perform with the Portland Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, or place in regional rudimental snare drum competitions, or received full music scholarships to colleges across the nation all the way from Oregon State University and University of Oregon, to Miami State University on the other side of the country.
...And so much more! All of these concepts are easy to learn and anyone can do it!

Check out these videos from some of my most notable students, including Mike Byrne from Smashing Pumpkins; Tim Skerpon from the band Melville; and Bryton Wilson from the metal bands Ocean of Mirrors, Paragon, and Dead Crown. They all started as absolute beginners with me. As you can see, I get results!
I have performed with Mike Skill from The Romantics, Bo Diddley, Rae Gordon, Karen Lovely, Federico Pol, Jim Mesi, Big Monti, Paul Delay, Kevin Selfe, Robbie Laws, Norman Sylvester, JR Sims, Terry Evans, Mark Lindsay, Jay Bird Koder, Steve Bradley, Jesse Samsel, Dover Weinberg, Megan James, Doug Rowell, Kinzel & Hyde, Echo Park, Emergency, Job Killing Robots, Matthew Russell, The Coasters, Steamy Windows, Lloyd Jones, and Turning Into Animals, and many others.
I have personally studied with drumming legends Thomas Lang, Stanton Moore, Johnny Vidocovich, Dr. John Wooten, and Don Worth. Come to find out, there is no such thing as talent. It's all hard work. If you have a teacher with the right information, and the time and dedication to put into practicing, you can accomplish absolutely anything.
I started playing drums in high school after playing the clarinet through elementary and middle school and realizing it would be very difficult to find work as a clarinet player later in life. I am glad I switched instruments because I saw all my friends put their horns in the closet after high school and never play them again.
I was initially taught by my friend John McEntire from Sam Barlow high school who was the number one rudimental snare drummer in the state of Oregon. After a few months, I started taking lessons from his teacher Don Worth and was soon performing in competitions myself. From the beginning I was always playing in a band of some kind whether with friends from school or older more experienced players I met through my teacher.
Let's do drum lessons! It's so much fun! Anyone can do it! If you want to be a famous rock star I think I can help you get there! Just remember it takes lots of practice and dedication. If you are up to the challenge so am I!
